| Attorney Lochhead to lead Denver Water - Denver Business Journal Posted: 12 Apr 2010 12:47 PM PDT Jim Lochhead, a longtime water-law attorney and a lead shareholder at Denver's Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck LLP, has been chosen to head Denver Water, the state's largest water provider with more than 1 million customers, the agency said Monday. Lochhead will become Denver Water's CEO and manager in June, when Hamlet "Chips" Barry, who has led Denver Water for nearly 20 years, will retire. Barry announced his intention to retire in January. Denver Water said 100 candidates were considered for the post. "Jim brings deep experience and expertise in Colorado water issues and the political process, as well as outstanding leadership, strategic visioning and management skills," said Penfield Tate, president of Denver Water's board of commissioners, in a statement. "We believe he has the necessary ability to maintain and build relationships with the myriad external stakeholders that work with Denver Water, and also the ability to be a dynamic, visionary leader for our staff and internal operations." Lochhead was executive director of the Colorado Department of Natural Resources under Gov. Roy Romer from 1994 to 1998. While with Brownstein's Aspen office, Lochhead has represented hydroelectric utilities, developers, ski areas, municipalities, states and special districts in water supply planning, water court matters and litigation, according to the firm's website. He also has negotiated interstate, basin-wide endangered species recovery programs for the Platte and Colorado River basins, according to the site. "I'm excited to lead the premier water utility in Colorado," said Lochhead, in a statement. "Denver Water is a solid, well-run utility. At the same time, we will face a number of challenges in the future, and I look forward to bringing my experience to bear and work with the employees to meet those challenges." Lochhead began his career practicing water law in Glenwood Springs in the early 1980s. He has represented the state of Colorado and a coalition of major water utilities and districts — including Denver Water — with regard to Colorado River operations and issues. Lochhead has a bachelor's degree in environmental biology and a law degree, both from the University of Colorado. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. | Lawmakers take the flight controls - AOPA ONLINE Posted: 12 Apr 2010 12:04 PM PDT Lawmakers take the flight controlsState lawmakers got a chance to take the controls and fly over the National Mall—virtually—at a Washington, D.C., event hosted by AOPA and other aviation organizations April 8. More than 200 state legislators and staff from across the nation came together for a reception following the National Conference of State Legislatures 2010 Spring Forum to find out more about the excitement, utility, and economic importance of general aviation. Many got a taste of the excitement in a full-motion Redbird flight simulator. "It is both fun and effective to be able to present GA's message in a forum like this," said AOPA Director of State Government Affairs Mark Kimberling. "With this amazing Redbird simulator we can not only tell legislators about the vast network of GA airports in and around their district, but we can actually show them as we fly over. So we really got these legislators thinking positively about GA in their states and even sparked an interest in taking flight lessons among some of them in the process—a win-win." AOPA sponsored the event, with cosponsors the General Aviation Manufacturers Association, the National Air Transportation Association, the National Association of State Aviation Officials, and the National Business Aviation Association. AOPA's regional representatives, who were in town for their annual spring meeting, took the opportunity to build relationships with lawmakers who influence aviation-related legislation in their areas. The association continues to meet with state decision-makers and monitor aviation-related legislation in all 50 states; the event aids in these efforts and had the additional benefit of allowing legislators to experience the allure of flight for themselves. Lawmakers were also able to visit many multimedia stations illustrating the excitement of GA flying and the vital role GA plays in many state economies.
